Education Matters: Teaching the Values of Public Service and Social Justice

Educational institutions can play a vital role in strengthening and sustaining American democracy. In recent years, schools have become battlegrounds in the culture wars — and Harvard is one of those battlegrounds. In this lecture, Professor McCarthy will draw from his work as a historian of social movements as well as his experiences as an undergraduate (Harvard Radcliffe Class of 1993) and faculty member who has taught for nearly three decades in Harvard College, Kennedy School of Government. and Graduate School of Education. He will argue that teaching the values of public service and social justice have never been more important, precisely because we are now teaching under fire and fighting for a future that our students — and all of us — will inherit.

Cost:    $70  HCM member (up to 2 tickets at this price; additional guests pay the non-member ratT)

                        This year, Member tickets are offered at a reduced price, with the Club subsidizing part of the cost.
