From the President...
Welcome to the Harvard Club in Maine!
Welcome to the Harvard Club in Maine, where over a hundred active members gather for events throughout the year.
In an effort to make lemonade from the lemons dealt us this year (no Harvard-Yale game!), the Harvard Club in Maine is continuing to provide opportunities for alumni from all schools to gather—either virtually or outside at appropriate safe venues—to exchange ideas and information with other stimulating alums. Since the Covid shutdown in the spring, we have still managed to hold a virtual annual meeting, a kayak expedition to Fort Gorges in Portland Harbor, a zoom lecture on climate change by Prof. Michael McElroy, Gilbert Butler Professor of Environmental Science, and a family apple picking event at Thompson's Orchard in New Gloucester. We are participating in a regional virtual lecture on October 29 by Prof. Steven Levitsky on ‘How Democracies Die’ sponsored by the Harvard Club of Vermont. On November 7, we gather to welcome alums to Portland at the Maine Beer Company in Freeport. On December 1, we and the other Harvard Clubs in New England are sponsoring a lecture by national security and climate science expert Juliette Kayyem. And that is only the second half of 2020.
We are looking for new options to replace our annual celebration of the Game and our Holiday Party—two of our traditional events—before we head into 2021. And we anticipate a series of zoom lectures and other gatherings, including our annual winter event at Pineland, in the first quarter of 2021. The rest of our schedule for this year will depend in large part on the course of the pandemic in Maine over the next year. With any luck, we will be able to hold our annual meeting and lecture in person next spring, and our cruise on Casco Bay in July.
Our Schools and Scholarships Committee coordinates the interviewing for all applicants to the College—which will take place on zoom this year. New members interested in interviewing are always welcome and our board is also seeking new members, especially from recent classes.
We are all enriched by the company of new alums and we welcome those with an attachment to any of Harvard University’s many schools, not just the College. So please sign up and join us soon! Dues are a mere $25 ($15 for recent graduates and free for current students) and entitle members to discounts at those events where there is a fee. We hope to see you.
